Anglo-Saxon brooch

Treasures found by Time Team revealed high-status Anglo-Saxons in West Langton.

The most famous archaeology on display in Harborough Museum is the Hallaton Treasure. Another notable discovery, aided by Channel 4’s Time Team, is the collection of Anglo-Saxon material from West Langton. A group of burials were found and whilst the skeletons had long since turned to dust, a fabulous selection of grave goods dating from the 6th century AD survived. Items displayed include an amber and glass bead necklace, bronze cruciform brooches and a silver-gilt equal arm brooch, hinting at high-status inhabitants of the area 1500 years ago.

An Anglo-Saxon brooch and necklace found at West Langton by Time Team in 2010. It is in the shape of a butterfly, golden and features intricate details with many curls and open spaces. There are beads surrounding it.
The brooch can be seen in the Religion and Belief case in the musem.

The brooch and beads that are on display were originally found in a block of soil and they had to be removed very carefully, as there was some damage. Conservators used various methods to repair this damage, and you can read more about this on the Wessex Archaeology website

West Langton

West Langton is one of the villages known as The Langtons, near Kibworth and Market Harborough. Langton Hall, which was built in the 17th century, is located here. The estate was first created in the 16th century by Robert Strelly, who was the Crown’s bailiff for the manor of Market Harborough.
