Highlights of Harborough

There’s a brand-new way to learn all about the history of Market Harborough, browse through some of Harborough Museum’s fascinating collection of old photographs and audio clips and contribute memories – without even leaving home!

Highlights of Harborough is a new online version of an interactive map project which was created by museum volunteers in 2010, bringing together a wealth of historical information about Harborough including photographs and oral history and giving visitors the chance to contribute to the collection by sharing their stories, photographs, comments and videos.

Access to the map and its information was previously only available on a single computer at Harborough Museum.

But now, the brand-new interactive version means that it’s fully online – and accessible around the world! And because it’s fully interactive, using the Historypin platform, it will keep growing and updating as users contribute their comments, videos, audio and images. It’s also available to view at Harborough Museum and Library on a dedicated iPad next to the help desks.

Some of the highlights include interviews with former workers at Woolworths and the Symington corset factory and a wide range of pictures – including images of troops in the Market Square preparing to leave for the First World War in 1914.

Councillor Richard Blunt, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet member for Heritage, Leisure & Arts, said: “This is an exciting project which helps to make the fascinating history of Market Harborough accessible to even more people, as well as giving them the opportunity to add their own contributions to the growing archive.” Highlights of Harborough can be viewed and added to by visiting http://www.harboroughmuseum.org.uk/highlights/
