Cake Stands and 3D Coins

Important work to make sure the Hallaton Treasure is protected for future generations took place recently, and we would like to give you a behind-the-scenes look!

On entering the Hallaton Treasure gallery visitors are wowed by the sheer number of sparkling silver and gold coins discovered at a Late Iron Age ritual site at Hallaton.

Members of the Collections and Conservation teams carefully removed some of these 5,300 coins, including from our custom display, affectionately known as the ‘cake stand’.

A pile of old coins are stacked on some foam, to give the impression they are a pile just found in the ground. A person with purple nitrile gloves poses in the background.
The coins piles are created using Plastazote®

To find out more about the cake stand, visit the Leicestershire Collections website.

Caring for the coins isn’t the only things we’ve been doing with them. Earlier this year, we carried out 3D scanning of several objects from the Hallaton Treasure. You can view a virtual 3D model below, and read more about the coins too.
