


Harborough Museum remains open during renovation work
The Symington Building will remain open to the public as normal while a programme of renovation works is carried out, starting on Monday 9 June.
The renovation work includes improvements to the Grade II listed building’s external masonry, roof and the windows to the front of the building and the tower. It is expected to last up to 39 weeks until March 2026.

Is it free to visit the museum?
Yes, entry to the museum is free.
How long should I allow for my visit?
We anticipate you will need around 45-60 minutes to enjoy the museum. Allow extra time if you would also like to visit Market Harborough Library too.
What are your opening hours?
Harborough Museum is open Tuesday-Friday 10am-6pm and Saturday 10am-4pm.
Can I eat or drink in the museum?
Food and drink is not permitted in the museum areas, but you can eat and drink in the library browser area.
Is there any taxidermy in the museum?
There are some stuffed birds in the following areas:
- Introduction to the district case
- Living off the land case
- Story Place lift-up flaps
Can I bring in something to give to the museum?
We are accepting donations of objects. You can complete a contact form with information about the object on our Add to the collections page. We will do our best to let you know if we would like to accept it into the collections.
Is the museum suitable for children?
Yes, there is a small play area with toys, dressing-up costumes, a market stall and a fire engine cab. Check what’s on to see our events programme.
Will there be catering facilities available?
Yes, the ground floor Insomnia Café in The Symington Building is open and there are many cafes nearby.
Is there somewhere to leave a buggy or pushchair?
There is no dedicated buggy or pushchair parking area. Please ask a member of staff for advice during your visit. There is level access throughout the museum and space for a buggy or pushchair to be taken around with you.
Can schools visit the museum?
Yes, you are welcome to visit. Schools can come for free on a self-led visit and we ask you contact us in advance to confirm the date, so we can expect you. We also have paid Museum Educator-led sessions, which you can book on the Leicestershire Museum Learning website. Maximum class sizes for a school visit is 35 people, and we do not have anywhere for children to have lunch.

Are dogs allowed in the museum?
Only assistance dogs are allowed in the museum.
Can I take photographs?
You are welcome to take photographs in the museum for personal use, or for your research. If you would like to film in the museum, or take photographs for commercial purposes, please contact us first.
Can I get married in the museum?
You can get married in The Symington Building in the Perry Gold Room in the Market Harborough Registration Office. The Registration Office is on the first floor and accessed through the museum and library. Please visit the Celebrate in Leicestershire website for more information.
